Positive School Safety Program for School Climate Staff
The School District of Philadelphia, like many districts nationwide, hires part-time non-instructional staff to monitor hallways, lunch, and recess. School Climate Staff, sometimes referred to as lunch aids or hall monitors, are often solely responsible for monitoring unstructured time at schools. Previous research has demonstrated that less supervised and unstructured time during the school day creates a heightened risk for violence. In many schools, School Climate Staff are provided with limited formal training in working with students to promote positive and address challenging behaviors.
Across the country, there are many school climate enhancement strategies focused on meeting the needs of students, or trainings and supports for teachers and administrators. The Positive School Safety Program (PSSP) for School Climate Staff compliments those efforts by focusing on building skills and supports for staff who are responsible for supervising unstructured or less structured time at school.
